Walk-Through Whale “Dee” on Site Both Days and Great Line-Up of Live Music are some of the highlights of the 16th Annual Whalefest Monterey April 11–12

Monterey, CA — March 17, 2026 — The 16th Annual Whalefest Monterey will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 11–12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at and around Old Fisherman’s Wharf and Custom House Plaza in Monterey State Historic Park. This free, family-friendly event celebrates the extraordinary marine life of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary through science, education, history, art, and live entertainment.

“Dee” the Humpback Whale Experience from Save the Whales — On Site Both Days This Year

A major highlight for families and students is the return of “Dee,” the beautiful 43-foot life-size humpback whale replica, which will be on site both days of Whalefest this year. Visitors can walk inside the whale to explore its anatomy and learn how whales communicate, feed, and survive in the ocean.

Through hands-on displays, students can examine real baleen, view krill (whale food), and learn about marine debris and stormwater pollution, becoming “junior scientists” while discovering how everyone can help protect ocean ecosystems. Dee also shares an inspiring story as an anti-bullying ambassador, encouraging young visitors to protect both each other and the ocean.

Save the Whales, a California nonprofit founded in 1977 by a mother-daughter team, began when 14-year-old Maris Sidenstecker II created a “Save the Whales” T-shirt to raise awareness about whaling—sparking nearly five decades of global advocacy and ocean education.

Today, the organization continues its mission to preserve and protect the ocean and its inhabitants through education and reaches 7,000-10,000 students per year in Monterey County, CA  and beyond. Threats from entanglement, ship strikes, pollution, and habitat destruction continue to harm these beautiful mammals.
