Call sign KSBW meaning: "Salad Bowl of the World", nickname for Salinas

KSBW (channel 8) is a television station licensed to Salinas, California, United States, serving the Monterey Bay area as an affiliate of NBC and ABC. Owned by Hearst Television, the station has studios on John Street (Highway 68) in downtown Salinas, and its transmitter is located on Fremont Peak in the Gabilan Mountains.

KSBW-TV began broadcasting on September 11, 1953. It was originally a shared-time operation with KMBY-TV, which operated from Monterey; the stations were outgrowths of radio stations KSBW and KMBY and shared programs from all four major television networks. KSBW bought out KMBY in 1955, becoming the sole station on channel 8. In 1957, its owners began operating KSBY in San Luis Obispo as a semi-satellite; the two stations remained commonly owned for more than three decades, and KSBW became the dominant local news outlet in the area. It retained this status despite a series of ownership transfers in the 1980s and 1990s, during which time Elisabeth Murdoch and her husband briefly owned KSBW and KSBY.

Hearst acquired KSBW in 1998 as part of a trade with Sunrise Television Corporation. Under Hearst, KSBW was the first station in the area to broadcast a digital signal. In 2011, it launched Central Coast ABC, a local in-market ABC affiliate, as a digital subchannel.

ABOUT: One of California's most historic cities, Monterey served as California's capital under Spanish, Mexican and U.S. military rule. The U.S. flag was first officially raised in California here on July 7, 1846, bringing 600,000 square miles of land to the United States.

Monterey State Historic Park is a collection of significant historic houses and buildings interspersed throughout Old Monterey. Hour long guided history tours are led regularly; tour information and tour tickets may be obtained at the Custom House (adjacent to Old Fisherman's Wharf). Our history tours are a great way to start your discovery of Monterey. See Tour Information for the current schedule.

Step into the past on the โ€œMonterey Walking Path of Historyโ€ and view the site where Spanish explorers first landed in Monterey in 1602. See one of the nationโ€™s last remaining whalebone sidewalks. Walk the same streets that famed author Robert Louis Stevenson walked in 1879. Explore this two-mile path and discover some of Californiaโ€™s most historic homes, buildings and beautiful gardens along the way. A self-guided mobile phone tour is available for this more "in-depth" experience. The tour is free, but does use phone minutes. Brochures are available at the Custom House or Pacific House musems.

Montereyโ€™s Path of History can be entered at any point. Just follow the yellow-tiled markers and discover Monterey State Historic Park, an area that preserves and interprets places and objects of statewide historic significance. OUR STORY: Headquartered in Castroville, California, Ocean Mist Farms is the largest grower of fresh artichokes in North America. Farming artichokes year-round in three ideal California growing regions: Castroville, Oxnard and Coachella, in addition to southern growing regions including Baja, Mexico and Yuma, Arizona. Our growing areas are selected for their fertile ground and productive microclimates. Castroville is, in fact, known as โ€œThe Artichoke Capital of the Worldโ€ and Artichokes were named the official state vegetable of California in 2013!

In addition to artichokes, Ocean Mist Farms grows and offers a full line of premium, fresh commodity vegetables as well as value-added options for those time-starved consumers who are looking for fresh vegetable options that are peeled/cored/chopped and ready to use and enjoy out-of-package.

Our fresh produce is grown using conventional methods and can be found in fine grocery stores across North America.

FAMILY FARMING LEGACY: Ocean Mist Farmsโ€™ family farming roots took hold nearly 100 years ago when Daniel Pieri and cousins Amerigo and Angelo Del Chiaros launched the California Artichoke & Vegetable Growers Corporation in 1924. Together, they leased land south of Castroville and soon Alfred Tottino, a local vegetable grower, joined the three men in their new business venture

    ABOUT: Where California was Born!

Downtown Monterey is a mecca of cultural and historical diversity which features a variety of dining options, retail stores, and entertainment. Its landscape combines the images of Montereyโ€™s past and present by allowing its patrons to walk the streets once walked by great historical figures while experiencing the modern charm of the seaside town. While visiting downtown, visitors can enjoy a delicious meal, shop till they drop, or take a trip through time and experience the rich history downtown Monterey has to offer.

The main street of downtown Monterey is Alvarado Street, which is recognized as a โ€œMain Street Communityโ€ by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The street was named for Juan Bautista Alvarado who was the former governor of Alta California. Alvarado Street is adjacent to several historical buildings including Colton Hall, the Larkin House, the Cooper Molera Adobe, the Stevenson House, the Custom House, and Californiaโ€™s First Theater. These landmarks and others can be toured daily, most of which for free, or be seen on the Path of History which is marked by round, yellow tiles which are embedded in the sidewalk throughout the downtown area.

Old Monterey is the heart of Historic Downtown. Serving the needs of residents and visitors alike, we offer a well-marked Path of History as well as more than 400 shops, restaurants, hotels, and businesses offering personal and professional services.

Downtown is also home of the Old Monterey Marketplace, held on Alvarado Street (our city's historic main street) every Tuesday, rain or shine. Hours are 4pm - 7pm, October through April, and 4pm - 8pm, May through September. As a Certified Farmer's Market, it offers deliciously tempting baked goods, fresh organic produce, and dozens of unique arts and crafts vendors.

    About

The Shagbag Show has been on the air since 2002. The one-hour show morphed out of a 5-minute golf tip segment-type show that ran from 1998-2003 on KOCN, and then KION. (featuring David Marzetti and Neil Allen, Head Pro at Del Monte golf course) And, now it's on 1240am/106.7fm KMBY!

During the first year, show host David Marzetti originally broadcast the Shagbag Show by himself from the KION studios in Salinas. His guests were put on-air via telephone.

Having done hundreds of "live" remote broadcasts from various locations made David think that it would be exciting to take the show on the road. After talking it over with Neil Allen, they both decided that it would be a fun idea to give the show a permanent home at the Del Monte golf course grille.

And that's where it's been ever since!
